Wormwood
There is one star you will not find on star charts. Rather, it is found in the New Testament book of The Revelation:
“Then the third angel sounded: And a great star fell from heaven, burning like a torch, and it fell on a third of the rivers and on the springs of water. The name of the star is Wormwood. A third of the waters became wormwood, and many men died from the water, because it was made bitter,” Rev. 8:10-11 NKJV
Wormwood is mentioned nine times in the Bible, always associated with a curse, bitterness, poison, death, decay, and God’s judgment.
This star is one of several astronomical signs that will appear during God’s last dealings with the people of earth. Others will concern the sun, moon and stars, as we read in the next verse:
“Then the fourth angel sounded: And a third of the sun was struck, a third of the moon, and a third of the stars, so that a third of them were darkened. A third of the day did not shine, and likewise the night,” v. 12.
The reduction of light is a severe judgment. It will certainly affect all green vegetation.
This is not a pleasant topic. We don’t like thinking about judgment. Nevertheless, it is real and certain, and the people of earth will face it.
We have been told of this in advance, and the Apostle Peter tells us why:
“Therefore, since all these things will be dissolved, what manner of persons ought you to be in holy conduct and godliness, looking for and hastening the coming of the day of God, because of which the heavens will be dissolved, being on fire, and the elements will melt with fervent heat?
“Nevertheless we, according to His promise, look for new heavens and a new earth in which righteousness dwells.
“Therefore, beloved, looking forward to these things, be diligent to be found by Him in peace, without spot and blameless,” 2 Peter 3:11-14.
