For a Christmas constellation, we might first think of Virgo, the virgin, carrying the promised Seed, or perhaps Coma, anciently portrayed as the woman holding the child. But a picture from Hubble of a star cloud in Sagittarius caught my eye, and for this Christmas blog that is the perfect constellation.
Sagittarius is figured as a centaur holding a bow with an arrow on the string. Its theme is One sent forth from God, the arrow being symbolic of the One sent. "But when the time had fully come, God sent his Son, born of a woman," Galatians 4:4.
Sagittarius is particularly rich in star clusters and nebulae. That fact and this photo bring to mind this scripture about Christ: "In Him are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge."
Wisdom is often likened to a treasure—to rubies in Proverbs 8:11 and to gold in Pro. 16:16. Thus a photo of jewel-like stars in Sagittarius is appropriate for honoring the One sent from God who even as a child "grew in wisdom and stature, and in favor with God and men," Luke 2:52.
A blessed Christmas celebration to all!
