Our most powerful telescopes have not yet reached the end of the universe, and most scientists believe the universe has no end. However, that is still debated, as shown by the article linked to the title above.
The Creator tells us in His word there is something beyond the stars.
Praise Him, sun and moon;
Praise Him, all you stars of light!
Praise Him, you heavens of heavens,
And you waters above the heavens!
Psalm 148:3-4
According to this, there are waters above the heavens—beyond outer space as we think of it. Genesis 1 tells how God structured the universe:
Verses 1-2: When God first called the heavens and earth into being, they consisted of a large mass of water.
Verses 6-8: God made a firmament—a spread out area, or expanse—which divided the waters into waters above the firmament and waters below the firmament.
Verses 9-10: God drew together the waters under the firmament and from them He made the earth with its seas.
Verses 14-18: God made the sun, moon and stars and set them in the firmament.
That leaves the waters above the firmament existing beyond the stars. And somewhere beyond them is God’s dwelling:
“He lays the beams of His upper chambers in the waters,” Psalm 104:3.
Even if we could imagine such an area, we know it cannot encompass God:
“Yet even the heaven and the heaven of heavens cannot contain God,” 1 Kings 8:27.
So, is the universe infinite? Definitely not. Only God is infinite and the structure of the universe helps us picture some part of what that means.
