Sirius—the Prince

http://isiopolis.com/2012/07/21/isis-sirius-and-the-dog-days-of-summer/
Of all the stars, Sirius is prince, as his name means. He is easy to find by looking east from Orion's belt.

Some want to say that the name derives from the Greek word for sparkling, since Eratosthenes wrote, "Such stars astronomers call seirios, on account of the tremulous motion of their light." However, this descriptive word the Greeks used for the sun and all the stars.

The name itself, however, means prince, and that meaning can be traced back through almost any language you choose—Welch, Russian, Old French, Norwegian—to Hebrew. And it is in the words of the ancient Hebrew prophet Isaiah 2,600 years ago that we find the Person represented by Sirus:

"For unto us a Child is born, unto us a Son is given; and the government will be upon His shoulder. And His name will be called Wonderful, Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace." (sar-shalom)

People are searching for peace in the Middle East, and the Bible says that a false peace will come about some day by the signing of a treaty between a coming "prince" and the nation of Israel. That treaty will be broken three and a half  years later. True peace will not come to the Middle East—or anywhere else—until the Prince of Peace, the rightful ruler of this world, arrives.

Sirius has been an object of worship in many cultures, but how much better to know the One it represents and to anticipate His coming.
