The Archer

Sagittarius has always been The Archer. To me he represents the Mighty One, who rides forth in “truth, humility, and righteousness,” and whose “arrows are sharp in the heart of the King’s enemies,” Psalm 45:3-5.

Connect the star dots of Kaus Borealis, Kaus Meridanalis, and Kaus Australis and you will form a bow—which is what those names mean: northern (part of the) bow, middle (part of the) bow, and southern (part of the) bow.

A sharp arrow is ready on the bowstring, marked by the star Al Nasl, the point. Imagine a straight line from Kaus Meridianalis through Al Nasl, and follow it to its target—Antares, also known as Cor Scorpii, heart of the scorpion.

Antares in Scorpius is a red supergiant, 300 times the diameter of the sun. It is a variable, meaning that it fluctuates in brightness—and that makes me think of a pulsating wound. In fact, the ancient roots of its name contain the idea of a knife or razor which makes destitute.

That is just what our Archer did when He “disarmed principalities and powers . . . triumphing over them,” Colossians 2:15. Those principalities and powers are Satan’s domain, but our Lord “gave Himself for our sins, that He might deliver us from this present evil age,” Galatians 1:4.

"He has delivered us from the power of darkness and conveyed us into the kingdom of the Son of His love,” Colossians 1:13.
