Comet McNaught

Comet McNaught won't be around for much longer. It's getting close to the sun—closest on July 2—and until then it is very low in the NE sky, about half an hour before dawn.

You'll need binoculars to see the comet. It is in northern Auriga near Capella. After July 2 it will still be very low on the horizon, but in the early evening. Visibility depends on where you live.

Comets through the ages were associated with bad news, particularly the downfall of rulers. I remember the first comet I saw. It was Kohoutek back in 1974 (photo above). That was the year of President Nixon's downfall and the murder of India's Indira Ghandi.

In addition, Brazilian President Emilio Medici, Canadian Prime Minister Trudeau, French President Pompidou, German Chancellor Brandt, Italian Prime Minister Rumor, Japanese Prime Minister Tanaka, and UK Prime Minister Heath were all replaced that year.

Pretty powerful comet?

No. The Scripture tells us that it is God who sets up and puts down rulers. That gives me a feeling of peace.
