Summer Solstice

On June 21, the day will be as long as it's going to get in the northern hemisphere, and as short as it's going to get in the southern hemisphere. The sun will start south again, and the days will change length.

Solstice (from the Latin words for sun and stand) happens twice a year. The sun appears to stand still for one day before changing direction. Of course, the sun doesn't really stop. The solstice is simply one point along earth's journey around the sun. The tilt of earth's axis relative to the sun makes the apparent stop and change of direction.

When the sun "stops" on its way north, there's no doubt which way it will go next. God has set both sun and earth in place and ordered their movements.

Sometimes we seem to come to a stopping place in our walk through life. Which way next? If we are set in our relationship to God, however, what seems like a stop is really just one point along our path. When we look back, we see that He directed us all along the way.

"In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths." Proverbs 3:6 KJV

 "I will instruct you and teach you in the way you should go;
   I will counsel you with my eye upon you." Psalm 32:8 ESV

"You make known to me the path of life;
   in your presence there is fullness of joy;
   at your right hand are pleasures forevermore." Psalm 16:11

 "For this God is our God for ever and ever;
       he will be our guide even to the end." Psalm 48:14 NIV
