Cygnus Flies South

Easily spotted high in the sky on the Milky Way, Cygnus the swan heads south. (Some people argue that it's flying north, but since its brightest star, Deneb, means tail, the head must be at the other end.) Cygnus looks like a cross, which makes it easy to identify. It is sometimes referred to as the Northern Cross.

Every year millions of birds migrate from cooler to warmer climates and back again.

The prophet Jeremiah made an observation about that:

"Even the stork in the sky knows her appointed seasons, and the dove, the swift and the thrush observe the time of their migration. But my people do not know the requirements of the LORD." Jeremiah 8:7.

The birds follow the God's law of migration because that is God's way of providing for them. If they did not follow that law, they would perish.

Similarly, God promised His people that if they walked in His ways He would bless them with material goods, with increased children, livestock, and produce, and He would bless all the work of their hands. They would lend to many nations, but not borrow; they would be the head and not the tail. (See Deuteronomy 28.)

That was true in this country for many years. As a Christian nation, we were blessed above all nations on earth. American-made goods were superior to others, and we supported many needy nations.

But God also warned of what would happen if His people turned aside from following Him: chronic incurable disease, mental confusion, drought, famine, debt, and war.

Is this true today? Think cancer, diabetes, autism, bi-polar, Alzheimer's, unemployment, poverty, personal debt, national debt, and the threat of enemy nations.

There's a long list of nations that have bit the dust because of abandoning God. There is only one way to avoid total ruin. We must repent from our careless attitude toward His word, and seek Him with a whole heart.
