Lady and the Lion

About 3:30AM this morning, Leo and Virgo were visible at their zenith. Viewing the two constellations together reminded me of the sphinx, the mythical creature with the head of a woman and the body of a lion.

Sphinx comes from the same Greek root as sphincter, which is a circular band of muscle that surrounds an orifice of the body or one of its hollow organs. Purse your lips to get an idea of how a sphincter works. The root meaning is "to bind closely together."

The mystery of the sphinx is explained on a ceiling in the temple of Esneh in Egypt where the sphinx is portrayed between Leo and Virgo on the zodiac. The sphinx unites—"binds closely together"—the beginning and end of the story in the stars.

Virgo, the beginning or "head" of the story, bears the Branch, the promised Seed of the woman (Genesis 3:15).

Leo, the end or "tail" of the story, represents the King of kings arising from the tribe of Judah to reign in peace and righteousness.

As the world situation becomes more intense, I am thankful that God has revealed the end of the story, and it is good. God pronounced the original creation "very good," and the end also will be very good. It is only this part in the middle where man is in rebellion against the laws God that things are not so. But the story is already written and the end is sure.
