Orion's Sword

Last night I looked up through the skylight and there clearly seen were Orion, Canis major, and Gemini. A winter spectacle!

Afterwards I meditated on Orion's sword belt. If he represents a hunter, as the ancient Greeks said, why does he wear a sword? A bow or a spear would suit, but a sword? That instrument is an instrument of war.

Or being the Hebrew for light, I prefer the interpretation of Orion as the Light-bearer. Does that title require the accessory of a sword?

Yes, it does.

Ephesians 6:17 tells us that the sword of the Spirit is the word of God.

Revelation 19:11-14 portrays One on a white horse who will make war, and whose name is called The Word of God.

2 Thessalonians 2:8 speaks of the Lord on his return destroying the lawless one (the Anti-Christ) with "the brightness of his coming."

Jesus said, "I am the light of the world." He said he did not come to bring peace, but a sword (Matthew 10:34).

That sword, God's word, divides between those who believe and those who do not. In many places of the world that struggle is violent. Many believers are paying with their lives for their faith. But the day is coming when the Lord will return in a blaze of glory and out of his mouth will go a sharp sword with which he will strike the nations (Revelation 19:15).

By his word the earth and heavens were created, and by his word, all will be consummated in glory.

  1. Jane, You did it again:)! Love the idea of the book. Sounds like a very interesting subject. I have always been drawn to the stars and Egypt. As a child I wanted to live in Egypt, that is until I visited! Now as time goes on and we have discovered that the acient Egyptians were into Astronomy. Orions belt is placed in the same map of the great pyramids.
We will find out so much more of what the ancients knew about the stars. I believe this is just the beginning. The Bible is ancient and so we learn on...
