The Beehive

Yesterday morning we had another clear sky. It wasn't quite as clear as the morning in my previous blog, but the moon was absent which allowed me to see more of the dimmer stars. Leo and Gemini were close to zenith, and between them my eye caught a smudge. Yes, it was The Beehive in Cancer, that faint constellation seldom seen. I ran for my binoculars. The smudge differentiated into an open star cluster.

In devotional astronomy, Cancer represents the encircled people of God—encircled, protected by God himself. "As the mountains surround Jerusalem, so the LORD surrounds his people," Psalm 125:2.

We might feel like we're only a smudge to those around us, but the seeing eye of God knows each one of us and calls us each by name, just as he does the stars, Isaiah 40:26.
